The start of the Jolly affair

Peter Roy liked his ‘Humbug’ print. He was very focused at the time on getting an exhibition of works on the Powerhouse up at the Powerhouse to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its opening. It's going to be held between the 26th June and 6th July 2025.

‘It might be nice to have an interior’ he said...‘something like the Bar at the Folies-Bergeres’.‘Manet is a hard act to follow, Peter’ says I—and the only connection with his suggestion to this print that I managed is in the cadence of the title.

What I did was to make a sort of reverse view of ‘Humbug’, a mirror image looking back out to the place in the river (on the City Cat) where ‘Humbug’ looked in from. ‘Flood’ was seen in reverse in ‘Humbug’ so now it could be seen from the front and the two would make a pair in that way.

And the other thing is that it's not really an interior...more a look into and through and back out of...whatever you call that. I know of four ‘Eddie Hoppers’ like that—he made a bit of a habit of it and he’s another hard act to follow.

Finally, of course, there is a lot of architectural intent in this print—we all like to think of our buildings knitting into their environments.
