On the Humbug Reach
Peter Roy is an old friend of mine. When he and his team at the Brisbane City Council repurposed the Brisbane Power House to become a venue for cultural events in an informal setting, the perception of what could be a cultural event broadened. The ambience at the Powerhouse was unlike the stiffer more formal notes struck by the building cluster further up the river, and we all grew up a little in this town...we needed an 'off centre', not just a 'centre.'
The reach of the river on which the building was sited often deprived the early sailing ships of wind apparently, and the irritated sailors gave it the name, Humbug. Now, with no more coal firing taking place at the Powerhouse and no more ash fall out, the washing on the New Farm lines is safe. The only mild disruption to a peaceful life on this bend of the river is the Saturday morning market held in the forecourt of the Powerhouse and spilling out into New Farm Park.
