Back of the Commercial...Ipswich
The Commercial Hotel in Ipswich is a two story timber building that fronts onto Ellenborough St. The ground falls away to the street behind to such an extent that the stumps supporting the 'ground' floor are eventually two stories high. When viewed from the street behind, the back of the building is epic in scale, four stories high.
The building probably started life in a pretty blunt and straightforward way. Once the niceties of the front elevation were discharged, it was 'down to business' and the plumbing out the back gives testament to that. It's had a rough life over the years but like many a country town pub, it's still hanging on.
In the timber vernacular of the state, it nails its time and place.
