Over the lines: hand coloured

The railway overbridge shown here in a fictitious setting, was the elegant standard solution built in many variations throughout the state in the early 20th century.

We now live in a time when larger footbridges are built and the word 'icon' is a licence for wasteful show-off construction hiding behind the word 'art.'

We are, in fact, surrounded by 'true icons', often defaced, from a rich and rigorous building tradition. We do not seem able to see them for what they are, let alone approach their quality in new work.
